The Bells of St Laurence’s,
Ludlow

The tower of St. Laurence’s contains one of the finest
rings of 8 bells in the country. They were cast by Abraham Rudhall of
Gloucester in 1732, with a tenor, or largest bell, weighing 25cwt, in
the key of D. The bells have significant historical interest and
feature in the early development of change ringing.
Oh come you home of Sunday
When Ludlow streets are still
And Ludlow bells are calling
To farm and lane and mill.
AE Housman
An appeal is currently underway to augment the bells
from 8 to 10 in the key of E, to create a lighter ring which will allow
some
younger members to ring more effectively. The present bells are very
heavy!
