The Chaplaincy at Ludlow Community Hospital

Replacement Items for Website Update – November 2007

Ludlow has a busy and well-used hospital with around 40 beds on two wards, a maternity unit, a minor injuries unit and an X-ray department. It is also the base for health visitors and district nurses, various consultant-led clinics and the out-of-hours GP service.

The pastoral and spiritual needs of the patients and staff are served by the Ecumenical Chaplaincy Team. Father Richard Green, Team Vicar in the Ludlow Team Ministry, is also the Hospital Chaplain and works with two colleagues – Father Jim Robinson (Roman Catholic) and Sister Gloria Baillie (Methodist). The team also contains a number of Chaplains’ Assistants, people from across the denominations who support the work of the chaplains. Several of the Chaplains’ Assistants are from the churches of Ludlow Team Ministry, along with Baptists and a Quaker.

Members of team regularly visit the patients and staff, and once a month a Eucharist is held in the Hospital, to which all patients are welcome. Team members visit all the patients the day before the service to invite them. At Christmas, Easter and Harvest non-Eucharistic services are held to which all members of the team contribute. A monthly thanksgiving service is held in the maternity unit. The team also meets regularly for training in different aspects of this demanding yet highly rewarding ministry.
