A Part of the Community
In addition to use as a place of worship by
its congregation, St Laurence's serves the wider community in a number
of ways. These include:
Baptisms, marriages and funerals for many people, some from Ludlow,
some from further afield. The church is often full for occasions of
special significance, such as the memorial service for a Lord
Lieutenant in 1996.
A wide range of civic and community services. These include annual
events such as St George's day, Mayor's Sunday and Remembrance Day and
also special occasions such as the annual service of the Chairman of
Shropshire County Council, held at Ludlow in 1996
Events of the annual Ludlow Festival. These
include opera, orchestral and chamber music, jazz concerts and comedy
shows. Leading orchestras have included the Royal Philharmonic, the
Royal Liverpool Philharmonic and the Hallé; while Humphrey
Lyttleton gave jazz concerts in 1973 and 1978.
Cultural events at other times of year, such as organ
recitals and performances by the Ludlow Choral Society. A highlight of
national significance in 1996 was the visit of the City of Birmingham
Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Sir Simon Rattle, to celebrate the
100th anniversary of A Shropshire Lad.
Its attraction for visitors to Ludlow who are welcomed and helped by
voluntary stewards. Many educational groups visit the church, from
parties of school children to university classes. The tower provides
the finest vantage point in Ludlow and is the town's best known
landmark symbol.
The bells and chimes immortalised by AE Housman, and enjoyed by
visitors from across the world, as well as being familiar and much
loved sounds to Ludlow residents.
